                                      Middle Archaic
                                      (ca.6,000 to 3,5oo B.C.)

The Middle Archaic is not well understood in Indiana.  This cultural period is associated with a  climatic warming trend.  Side notched points are still being used.  Points diagnostic of this time period are; Stanley stemmed, Raddatze,  Godar, Karnak, and Matanzas Evas, and Benton Stemmed.
Ground stone tools appear during this time period; groved axes, spear thrower weights are some of them.  Middle Archaic settlements are used for longer periods of time, indicating a more sedentary way of life.  sites occur along major deainages. Harvesting of resources such as nut and seeds are also characteristics.
