                                Early Woodland
                                   (ca. 1000 - 200 B.C.)

The difference between Late Archaic and Early Woodland is the appearance of ceramics (pottery) .  Mounds are still being constructed, with elaborare ritual and mortuary activities, mortuary complexes with log tombs and red ochre found.  Domestic plants appear, including gourds and sun flowers. Large bladed points are diagnostic of Early Woodland,  including Meadowood, Adena, Kramer, Dickson, Motley, and Gary Contracting Stemmed.
